Pips and Pipettes
A pip is the standard unit of movement in a currency pair; a pipette is a tenth of a pip. Learn pip sizes, how to calculate pip value and convert pips to money.
Forex prices move in tiny increments, so traders use a standard unit called a pip to describe changes. For most pairs, a pip is the fourth decimal place: a move in EUR/USD from 1.0850 to 1.0851 is one pip. For yen pairs, a pip is the second decimal place. Most brokers now quote one extra decimal, a fractional pip called a pipette. Knowing how to convert pips into money is essential for setting stops, measuring profit and sizing positions.
Pip sizes#
| Pair type | Pip | Pipette | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Most pairs (EUR/USD, GBP/USD, AUD/USD) | 0.0001 | 0.00001 | 1.08503: the 0 is the pip digit, the final 3 is pipettes |
| Yen pairs (USD/JPY, EUR/JPY) | 0.01 | 0.001 | 150.257: the 5 is the pip digit, the 7 is pipettes |
"Pip" is often said to stand for "percentage in point" or "price interest point". A pipette is one tenth of a pip.
Pip value#
The money value of one pip depends on the pair and the position size.
pip value (in quote currency) = pip size × position size in units
To express it in your account currency, convert from the quote currency if needed.

Pip values by lot size (USD quote pairs)#
| Lot | Units | Pip value |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | 100,000 | $10 |
| Mini | 10,000 | $1 |
| Micro | 1,000 | $0.10 |
See Lots: Standard, Mini and Micro.
Using pips for risk#
Most traders set stops in pips, then size positions so the dollar loss at the stop matches their risk rule.
position size (units) = account risk / (stop in pips × pip value per unit)
Spreads in pips#
Brokers usually express spreads in pips. Major pairs often have spreads under 1 pip during liquid hours, while exotics can have spreads of 20 pips or more. Spreads widen around news and during quiet sessions. See Forex Trading Sessions.
Pips in other markets#
The pip idea is specific to forex, but every market has a minimum increment. Futures use ticks, stocks use cents. See Ticks and Tick Size and Tick Size and Tick Value.
Common mistakes#
- Treating pipettes as pips, which makes moves look ten times larger.
- Assuming every pair is $10 per pip for a standard lot.
- Setting stops in pips without converting to money.
