Volume divergence happens when price and volume tell different stories. The most common example is price pushing to new highs while volume steadily shrinks. Fewer and fewer participants are driving the move, which suggests it may be losing fuel. Divergence does not predict exact turning points, but it is a useful warning that a trend is getting weaker beneath the surface.

## Types of volume divergence

| Type | Price | Volume | Warning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bearish | Higher highs | Lower volume on each push | Uptrend losing participation |
| Bullish | Lower lows | Lower volume on each drop | Downtrend losing selling pressure |
| Climax divergence | New extreme on huge volume, then a weak follow up | Spike then fade | Possible exhaustion |

## Why divergence matters

In a healthy trend, each new high attracts more buyers, so volume tends to rise or at least hold steady on advances. When volume falls on successive new highs, the trend is being carried by fewer participants. That makes it fragile: a modest increase in selling can push price down because buyers are thin.

**Example: Bearish volume divergence**
A stock makes three successive highs over two months: $72 on 3.2 million shares, $76 on 2.4 million and $78 on 1.6 million. Each high is higher, but volume falls by about a quarter each time. The trend is still up, but participation is drying up. A trader holding the stock tightens the stop below the last swing low at $73. Two weeks later the stock breaks $73 and falls to $68.

## Bullish divergence in downtrends

When a falling market makes new lows on shrinking volume, sellers are running out. This often happens late in a decline, after the most emotional selling. A final low on lighter volume, followed by a rally on heavier volume, is a common bottoming sequence.

## Using indicators to spot divergence

Volume based indicators make divergence easier to see:

- **On-Balance Volume (OBV):** price makes a new high but OBV does not. See [On-Balance Volume (OBV)](https://learn.tradelabsai.com/volume/obv/).
- **Accumulation/Distribution:** price rises while the line falls. See [Accumulation/Distribution](https://learn.tradelabsai.com/volume/accumulation-distribution/).
- **Money Flow Index:** a volume weighted RSI that can show divergence. See [Money Flow Index (MFI)](https://learn.tradelabsai.com/volume/money-flow-index/).

Momentum divergence on RSI or MACD is related but measures speed, not participation. When both volume and momentum diverge at the same time, the warning is stronger. See [RSI (Relative Strength Index)](https://learn.tradelabsai.com/indicators/rsi/).

## How to act on divergence

Divergence is a warning, not a trigger. Trends can continue with divergence for a long time. Practical responses:

1. **Tighten stops** on existing positions.
2. **Take partial profits** instead of adding to the position.
3. **Wait for structure to break** before trading a reversal, such as a break of the most recent higher low. See [Change of Character](https://learn.tradelabsai.com/price-action/change-of-character/).
4. **Be more selective with new trades** in the direction of a diverging trend.

## When divergence misleads

- **Holiday periods and summer markets** naturally have lower volume.
- **Long trends** can show volume declining from an early climax without weakening meaningfully.
- **Low timeframe noise** produces frequent false divergences.

Always compare volume with comparable periods, and use higher timeframes for more reliable signals.

## Common mistakes

- **Shorting immediately on divergence** while the trend is intact.
- **Ignoring seasonal volume changes.**
- **Seeing divergence everywhere** on low timeframes.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is volume divergence?

When price makes new highs or lows but volume does not confirm, usually by shrinking, suggesting the move has less participation behind it.

### Is volume divergence a sell signal?

Not by itself. It is a warning that a trend is weakening. Many traders wait for a break in price structure before acting.

### What is the difference between volume and momentum divergence?

Volume divergence shows declining participation; momentum divergence shows declining speed of price movement. Both together are a stronger warning.
