Every trade has a buyer and a seller, so in one sense buying always equals selling. What differs is who was more **aggressive**. When buyers are eager enough to pay the ask price, they push price up; when sellers are eager enough to accept the bid, they push it down. Buying pressure and selling pressure describe which side is taking the initiative, and traders estimate it using candles, volume and order flow data.

## Aggressors and passive traders

| Role | What they do | Effect on price |
|---|---|---|
| Aggressive buyer | Sends market or marketable orders that lift the ask | Pushes price up |
| Aggressive seller | Hits the bid | Pushes price down |
| Passive buyer | Rests limit orders on the bid | Absorbs selling |
| Passive seller | Rests limit orders on the ask | Absorbs buying |

Price moves when aggressive orders overwhelm the passive orders on the other side. See [The Order Book and Market Depth](https://learn.tradelabsai.com/market-structure/the-order-book-and-market-depth/).

## Reading pressure from candles

- **Closes near the high** with small upper wicks show buyers in control into the close.
- **Closes near the low** show sellers in control.
- **Long lower wicks** show sellers pushed down but buyers absorbed it.
- **Long upper wicks** show buyers pushed up but sellers absorbed it.

Indicators such as the Accumulation/Distribution line formalise this by weighting volume by where the close falls within the range. See [Accumulation/Distribution](https://learn.tradelabsai.com/volume/accumulation-distribution/).

## Reading pressure from volume

On-Balance Volume and similar indicators assign each period's volume to buyers or sellers based on whether price closed up or down. They are rough but useful for spotting persistent buying or selling. See [On-Balance Volume (OBV)](https://learn.tradelabsai.com/volume/obv/).

## Delta: order flow data

More precise analysis classifies each trade as buyer initiated (at the ask) or seller initiated (at the bid):

```
Delta = Volume traded at the ask − Volume traded at the bid
Cumulative delta = Running total of delta over the session
```

Positive delta means aggressive buyers dominated; negative means aggressive sellers did. Footprint charts show delta at each price inside each candle.

**Example: Delta divergence**
A futures contract rallies to a new session high, but cumulative delta has been falling for the last 30 minutes: aggressive selling is outpacing aggressive buying even as price edges up. That suggests passive sellers are absorbing the rally. Shortly after, price reverses and drops. The divergence between price and delta revealed the weakness first.

## Reading the tape

Time and sales, often called the tape, lists every trade with its price, size and time. Watching for large trades at the ask or bid, the speed of trading and whether price moves after big orders gives experienced traders a feel for pressure. It requires practice and is most relevant for very short term trading.

## Absorption

Sometimes heavy aggressive selling hits a level and price does not fall. That means passive buyers are absorbing the selling. When the aggressive sellers stop, price can rise quickly. Absorption is one of the clearest order flow signals at support and resistance. See [Volume Analysis Basics](https://learn.tradelabsai.com/volume/volume-analysis-basics/).

## Limits of pressure analysis

- **Hidden liquidity:** iceberg and hidden orders absorb pressure without appearing in the book.
- **Fragmented markets:** in US stocks, trades happen across many venues; classification can be imperfect.
- **Forex:** no central tape exists for spot currencies.
- **Context still matters:** strong buying into major resistance may still fail.

## Common mistakes

- **Treating green volume as "buying volume".** The candle colour reflects price direction, not who was aggressive.
- **Over reading single large trades,** which may be one side of a hedge or a block negotiated elsewhere.
- **Ignoring absorption** and assuming heavy selling must push price lower.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is buying pressure?

Aggressive buying where buyers pay the ask price, overwhelming available sellers and pushing price up.

### What is delta in trading?

The difference between volume traded at the ask (buyer initiated) and at the bid (seller initiated), showing which side was more aggressive.

### Can I see buying and selling pressure on a normal chart?

Partly, from candle closes, wicks and volume. Precise measurement needs order flow data such as delta and footprint charts.
