The simplest and most reliable definition of a trend comes from swing points. An **uptrend** is a series of higher highs (HH) and higher lows (HL). A **downtrend** is a series of lower highs (LH) and lower lows (LL). This idea goes back to Dow Theory in the early 1900s and remains the backbone of price action trading today.

## The four labels

| Label | Meaning | Tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Higher high (HH) | A swing high above the previous swing high | Buyers pushed further than last time |
| Higher low (HL) | A swing low above the previous swing low | Sellers could not push as far down |
| Lower high (LH) | A swing high below the previous swing high | Buyers are getting weaker |
| Lower low (LL) | A swing low below the previous swing low | Sellers pushed further than last time |

An uptrend needs both: higher highs show buyers advancing, and higher lows show they are defending ground on pullbacks.

## What healthy and weakening trends look like

**Example: A trend losing strength**
A coin rises in an uptrend: HL at $100, HH at $120, HL at $110, HH at $135. Then a pullback to $122 (still a higher low), and a rally to only $137, barely a higher high. The next pullback falls to $119, below $122. Then a rally fails at $130, a lower high. The sequence shows buyers gradually losing control: smaller new highs, then a broken higher low, then a lower high.

Signs of a strong trend:

- New highs clearly exceed old ones.
- Pullbacks are shallow and short compared with the advances.
- Strong candles in the trend direction, weak candles against it.

Signs of a weakening trend:

- New highs only just exceed old ones, or fail.
- Pullbacks become deeper and longer.
- The latest higher low is broken. See [Change of Character](https://learn.tradelabsai.com/price-action/change-of-character/).

## Trading with trend structure

### Buying higher lows

In an uptrend, the classic entry is near a new higher low, after a pullback, when price shows signs of turning up again. The stop goes below that higher low; if it breaks, the uptrend structure is in doubt.

### Selling lower highs

In a downtrend, the mirror image: sell rallies that form lower highs, with a stop above them.

### Confirmation entries

Some traders wait for a **break of structure**, a new higher high, before entering, accepting a worse price in exchange for confirmation. See [Break of Structure](https://learn.tradelabsai.com/price-action/break-of-structure/).

## The timeframe matters

Structure is timeframe specific. A daily uptrend can contain a downtrend on the 15 minute chart that is just a pullback. Traders often use a higher timeframe to set direction and a lower one to time entries. See [Multi-Timeframe Analysis](https://learn.tradelabsai.com/price-action/multi-timeframe-analysis/).

| Higher timeframe | Lower timeframe | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Uptrend | Downtrend | Pullback; look for the lower timeframe to turn back up |
| Uptrend | Uptrend | Aligned; strongest long conditions |
| Downtrend | Uptrend | Bounce within a downtrend; long trades are against the bigger trend |
| Range | Either | Expect rotation between range edges |

## Combining structure with other tools

- **Trend lines** connect higher lows in an uptrend. See [Trend Lines](https://learn.tradelabsai.com/price-action/trend-lines/).
- **Moving averages** often slope in the direction of structure, and price tends to hold above a rising average in uptrends. See [Moving Averages Explained](https://learn.tradelabsai.com/indicators/moving-averages-explained/).
- **Volume** should ideally expand on moves in the trend direction and contract on pullbacks. See [Volume Analysis Basics](https://learn.tradelabsai.com/volume/volume-analysis-basics/).

## Common mistakes

- **Calling every small dip a lower low** on too low a timeframe.
- **Buying the highs** of a trend instead of waiting for pullbacks to higher lows.
- **Holding long positions after structure breaks** because the higher timeframe "should" keep going.
- **Forcing trend labels onto a range,** where highs and lows are roughly equal.

## Frequently asked questions

### What does higher highs and higher lows mean?

That each swing high and each swing low is above the previous one, which defines an uptrend.

### When does an uptrend end?

Many traders consider it in doubt when the most recent higher low is broken, and over when a lower high and lower low form.

### Can a trend have equal highs?

Yes, and equal highs often signal hesitation. Repeated equal highs and lows usually mean the market has moved into a range.
