A change of character (CHoCH) is the first sign that a trend may be turning. In an uptrend, it happens when price breaks below the most recent higher low. In a downtrend, it happens when price breaks above the most recent lower high. It does not prove a reversal, but it shows that the side that was in control has failed to defend its last level.

## How a CHoCH forms

## CHoCH vs BOS

| | Break of structure | Change of character |
|---|---|---|
| Direction | With the trend | Against the trend |
| Signals | Continuation | Possible reversal or deeper pullback |
| Uptrend trigger | Break above the last high | Break below the last higher low |
| Downtrend trigger | Break below the last low | Break above the last lower high |

## Confirmation matters

A single CHoCH can be a deeper pullback rather than a reversal. Traders look for more evidence:

1. **A close beyond the level,** not just a wick.
2. **Displacement:** a strong move through the level shows conviction. See [Displacement](https://learn.tradelabsai.com/smart-money/displacement/).
3. **A follow-up lower high** (after a bullish trend breaks) that fails below the previous high, then a further break lower. This full sequence turns a CHoCH into a new downtrend.
4. **Location:** a CHoCH at a major higher timeframe resistance level is more meaningful than one in the middle of a range.

**Example: From uptrend to downtrend**
On the daily chart, a stock makes higher lows at $72 and $78 and a high at $91. Price falls and closes at $76.50, below the $78 higher low: a CHoCH. It bounces to $84, well short of $91, forming a lower high, then falls and closes below $76.50. Now there is a lower high and a lower low: the CHoCH has developed into a confirmed downtrend.

## Trading a change of character

- **Conservative:** wait for the full sequence of CHoCH, lower high and break lower before shorting. Later entry, more confirmation.
- **Aggressive:** after a CHoCH, look to sell the first pullback into the broken level or a supply zone, with a stop above the most recent high. Earlier entry, more risk of being wrong. See [Supply and Demand Zones](https://learn.tradelabsai.com/smart-money/supply-and-demand-zones/).
- **Exit signal:** for traders already long, a CHoCH is a common reason to take profits or tighten stops, even if they do not reverse their view.

## Internal CHoCH for entries

On lower timeframes, a CHoCH inside a pullback can signal that the pullback is ending and the main trend is resuming. For example, in a daily uptrend, the 15 minute chart's downtrend during a pullback shifts with a break above its last lower high. That internal CHoCH can time a long entry in the direction of the bigger trend. See [Internal vs External Structure](https://learn.tradelabsai.com/price-action/internal-vs-external-structure/).

## Common mistakes

- **Calling a reversal on every CHoCH** in a strong trend, where many are just pullbacks.
- **Ignoring the timeframe:** an internal CHoCH on the 1 minute chart says little about the daily trend.
- **Shorting immediately at the break** with no plan for a retest, often selling the low.
- **Not adjusting existing positions** when the character of the market clearly changes.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is a change of character in trading?

The first break of market structure against the current trend, such as price breaking below the last higher low in an uptrend.

### Does a CHoCH mean the trend has reversed?

Not always. It is an early warning. Many traders wait for a lower high and a further lower low to confirm a reversal.

### Is CHoCH the same as a market structure shift?

The terms are often used interchangeably, though some traders reserve market structure shift for a CHoCH accompanied by strong displacement.
