Markets do not behave the same way all day. Liquidity, volatility and the types of traders active change with the clock, from busy opens to quiet lunch hours to thin overnight markets. Knowing when your market is most active, and when it is dangerous to trade, is as practical as knowing any chart pattern.

## US stock market hours

| Session | Time (US Eastern) | Character |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-market | 4:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. | Thin liquidity, wide spreads, reacts to overnight news and earnings |
| Opening auction | 9:30 a.m. | Sets the official opening price |
| Regular session | 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. | Deepest liquidity; most volume at the open and close |
| Closing auction | 4:00 p.m. | Sets the official closing price; very large volume |
| After-hours | 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. | Thin trading; earnings reactions often happen here |

Extended hours times vary slightly by venue and broker. The NYSE and Nasdaq are closed on weekends and US market holidays, with some early closes. See [Opening and Closing Auctions](https://learn.tradelabsai.com/market-structure/opening-and-closing-auctions/).

### The shape of a stock trading day

- **First 30 to 60 minutes:** the highest volume and volatility of the day as overnight news is priced in. Spreads can be wide in the first minutes.
- **Midday:** volume usually drops, ranges narrow and moves are less reliable.
- **Final hour:** volume rises again as funds and traders position for the close.

## Forex sessions

Forex trades 24 hours a day from Sunday evening to Friday evening, US time, as financial centres hand over to each other.

| Session | Approximate hours (US Eastern) | Typical activity |
|---|---|---|
| Sydney | 5:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. | Quieter; AUD and NZD active |
| Tokyo | 7:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. | JPY pairs active |
| London | 3:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. | Largest share of volume |
| New York | 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. | USD pairs active; overlaps with London |

The London and New York overlap, roughly 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Eastern, is usually the most liquid period of the forex day. Exact hours shift with daylight saving changes in different countries. See [Forex Trading Sessions](https://learn.tradelabsai.com/forex/forex-trading-sessions/).

## Futures hours

Many US futures, such as stock index and crude oil futures, trade nearly around the clock from Sunday evening to Friday afternoon, with a short daily break. Their busiest hours still match the underlying market, for example the US stock session for index futures.

## Crypto never closes

Crypto trades every minute of every day. Liquidity is usually highest when US and European traders overlap and lowest at weekends and in late US night hours. Thin weekend markets can produce sharp moves and liquidation cascades. Short term prediction markets on crypto, such as Polymarket's 5 and 15 minute Bitcoin rounds, also run around the clock.

## Why sessions matter to your trading

1. **Costs:** spreads and slippage are lowest when liquidity is deepest. See [Liquidity](https://learn.tradelabsai.com/markets/liquidity/).
2. **Volatility:** opens and overlaps bring bigger moves; quiet hours bring smaller ones. Match your strategy to the session.
3. **Gaps:** markets that close, like stocks, can open far from the previous close. Overnight and weekend gaps can skip your stops.
4. **Reference levels:** traders watch the previous session's high, low and close, the opening range and overnight highs and lows. See [Session, Weekly and Monthly Levels](https://learn.tradelabsai.com/price-action/session-levels/).
5. **Your schedule:** choose a market whose active hours fit your life. A swing trading plan suits a full time job better than scalping the open.

**Example: Same strategy, different times**
A breakout strategy on a large US stock produces many false signals at 12:30 p.m., when volume is thin, and fewer at 9:45 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., when volume confirms moves. Splitting results by time of day in a [Trading Journal](https://learn.tradelabsai.com/start-here/trading-journal/) often reveals hours to avoid.

## Frequently asked questions

### What time does the US stock market open and close?

Regular trading runs from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Eastern time on weekdays, with pre-market and after-hours sessions outside those hours.

### Is it a good idea to trade pre-market?

It can be useful for reacting to news, but liquidity is thin and spreads are wide. Many brokers only allow limit orders in extended hours for this reason.

### What is the best time to trade forex?

For most major pairs, the London and New York overlap offers the deepest liquidity and tightest spreads.
