A portfolio manager (PM) decides what a portfolio holds and how much of each, and is accountable for its performance. PMs run mutual funds, ETFs with active strategies, pension portfolios, hedge fund books and private wealth accounts. They draw on analysts' research, risk teams and traders, but the final investment decisions and the responsibility for results are theirs. It is one of the most senior and scrutinised roles in finance.

## How PMs are judged

| Measure | Lesson |
|---|---|
| Returns versus benchmark | [Information Ratio and Tracking Error](https://learn.tradelabsai.com/portfolio/information-ratio/) |
| Risk adjusted returns | [Sharpe Ratio](https://learn.tradelabsai.com/portfolio/sharpe-ratio/) |
| Drawdowns | [Maximum Drawdown](https://learn.tradelabsai.com/portfolio/maximum-drawdown/) |
| Attribution: where returns came from | [P&L and Performance Attribution](https://learn.tradelabsai.com/industry/performance-attribution/) |
| Consistency with mandate | Staying within style and limits |

At multi manager hedge funds, PMs often run their own books with strict drawdown limits; losing a set amount, sometimes in the mid single digits as a percentage of allocated capital, can mean capital is cut or the PM is let go. See [Risk, Position, Loss and Drawdown Limits](https://learn.tradelabsai.com/portfolio/risk-limits/).

**Example: A PM's decision process**
An equity PM's analyst recommends a retailer at $40, estimating fair value at $55. The PM asks what the market is missing, what would prove the thesis wrong and how the stock would fit the portfolio. The stock is highly correlated with two existing consumer holdings, so the PM sizes it at 2% rather than 4%, trims one of the other consumer positions, and sets a review trigger if quarterly same store sales disappoint. The decision combines the investment case with portfolio level risk. See [Correlation Management](https://learn.tradelabsai.com/portfolio/correlation-management/).

## Skills needed

- **Investment judgement:** turning research into decisions under uncertainty.
- **Risk management:** seeing the portfolio as a whole. See [Diversification](https://learn.tradelabsai.com/portfolio/diversification/).
- **Discipline:** sticking to process through drawdowns. See [Discipline](https://learn.tradelabsai.com/psychology/discipline/).
- **Communication:** explaining decisions to clients and teams.
- **Leadership:** managing analysts and working with traders.

## Typical path

1. **Analyst roles,** on the sell side or buy side, building research skills.
2. **Senior analyst** with responsibility for a sector or strategy.
3. **Co portfolio manager** or managing a small sleeve of capital.
4. **Portfolio manager** with full responsibility.

Professional credentials such as the CFA charter are common among fundamental PMs, though not required. Quant PMs usually come from research roles. See [Quant Trader and Quant Researcher](https://learn.tradelabsai.com/industry/quant-trader/).
