Market makers stand ready to buy and sell, quoting both a bid and an ask, and earn money from the spread while managing the risk of the positions they accumulate. Options market makers do this across thousands of option contracts, pricing them with models and hedging their exposure to price moves, volatility and time. These roles are found at electronic trading firms, proprietary trading firms and banks, and they are known for intense training, fast decision making and a heavy focus on probability.

## What a market maker does

## Options market making

Options traders manage a book of many options with different strikes and expiries. They think in Greeks:

| Greek | Risk it measures | Lesson |
|---|---|---|
| Delta | Exposure to the underlying price | [Delta](https://learn.tradelabsai.com/options/delta/) |
| Gamma | How delta changes as price moves | [Gamma](https://learn.tradelabsai.com/options/gamma/) |
| Vega | Exposure to implied volatility | [Vega](https://learn.tradelabsai.com/options/vega/) |
| Theta | Time decay | [Theta](https://learn.tradelabsai.com/options/theta/) |

They typically hedge delta continuously and manage gamma and vega across the book, aiming to profit from the spread and from pricing volatility well. See [Delta Hedging](https://learn.tradelabsai.com/options/delta-hedging/) and [The Option Greeks Explained](https://learn.tradelabsai.com/options/the-option-greeks-explained/).

**Example: Earning the spread and hedging**
An options market maker quotes a call at $2.00 bid and $2.10 offer. A customer buys 100 contracts at $2.10. The call has a delta of 0.50, so the market maker is now short exposure equal to 5,000 shares (100 contracts times 100 shares times 0.50). They buy 5,000 shares to hedge. If they later buy 100 calls back at $2.00 from another customer and sell the shares, they capture about $0.10 per share on 10,000 option shares, or $1,000, minus hedging costs and any losses from price moves while holding. The edge per trade is small; profit comes from doing this many times with careful risk control. See [Bid-Ask Spread](https://learn.tradelabsai.com/markets/bid-ask-spread/).

## Skills firms look for

- **Probability and expected value** thinking. See [Expected Value](https://learn.tradelabsai.com/math/expected-value/).
- **Fast mental arithmetic.**
- **Decision making under uncertainty** with incomplete information.
- **Risk discipline:** knowing when to reduce exposure.
- **Teamwork and communication** on a busy desk.
- **Programming,** increasingly important as quoting is automated.

## Interviews

Market making interviews are known for:

| Format | Tests |
|---|---|
| Mental maths tests | Speed and accuracy under time pressure |
| Probability puzzles | Expected value and conditional probability. See [Conditional Probability](https://learn.tradelabsai.com/math/conditional-probability/) |
| Market making games | Quoting a two sided market on an uncertain quantity and adjusting as information arrives |
| Betting and sizing games | Risk management and position sizing. See [Kelly Criterion](https://learn.tradelabsai.com/risk/kelly-criterion/) |
| Behavioural interviews | Handling pressure and losses |

## Training and career path

Many firms run training programs lasting several months, teaching options theory, the firm's systems and simulated trading before traders handle live risk. Traders often progress from assisting on a desk to managing their own products and eventually larger books, or move into research, strategy or management roles. See [Trading Careers Explained](https://learn.tradelabsai.com/industry/trading-careers-explained/).

## Challenges

- **Adverse selection:** losing to better informed traders.
- **Intense competition** with tight spreads.
- **Sudden volatility** that can cause large losses on unhedged risk. See [Volatility Crush and Expansion](https://learn.tradelabsai.com/volatility/volatility-crush-and-expansion/).
- **Technology dependence:** systems must be fast and reliable. See [Risk Controls and Kill Switches](https://learn.tradelabsai.com/algo-trading/risk-controls-and-kill-switches/).
