A charting platform is where most traders spend their screen time: drawing levels, adding indicators, watching price and often placing orders. Platforms differ in the markets they cover, how they connect to brokers, their scripting languages, data quality and price. The best choice depends on what you trade and how you trade it. Many traders use more than one: a broad charting tool for analysis and a broker platform or specialist tool for execution.

## The main platforms at a glance

| Platform | Best known for | Main markets | Scripting | Lesson |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| TradingView | Browser based charts, huge community, many markets | Stocks, crypto, forex, futures, indices | Pine Script | [TradingView](https://learn.tradelabsai.com/industry/tradingview/) |
| MetaTrader 4 and 5 | Forex and CFD trading with automated expert advisors | Forex, CFDs, some stocks and futures on MT5 | MQL4, MQL5 | [MetaTrader](https://learn.tradelabsai.com/industry/metatrader/) |
| NinjaTrader | Futures trading, order flow tools, automation | Futures | NinjaScript (C#) | [NinjaTrader](https://learn.tradelabsai.com/industry/ninjatrader/) |
| thinkorswim | Options analysis, US stocks and futures | US stocks, options, futures, forex | thinkScript | [Thinkorswim](https://learn.tradelabsai.com/industry/thinkorswim/) |
| Sierra Chart | Fast, low cost futures charting and order flow | Futures, stocks | ACSIL (C++) | |
| cTrader | Forex and CFD trading with depth of market | Forex, CFDs | C# | |
| Broker web platforms | Convenience, built into brokerage accounts | Varies | Rarely | [How to Choose a Broker](https://learn.tradelabsai.com/industry/how-to-choose-a-broker/) |

## How to choose

| If you mainly | Consider |
|---|---|
| Analyse many markets and share ideas | TradingView |
| Trade forex or CFDs with automated strategies | MetaTrader or cTrader |
| Day trade futures with order flow tools | NinjaTrader or Sierra Chart. See [Volume Profile](https://learn.tradelabsai.com/volume/volume-profile/) |
| Trade US options | thinkorswim or another options focused broker platform |
| Trade crypto on one exchange | The exchange's own interface or TradingView |
| Trade Polymarket's crypto up or down rounds | A chart that shows the round's price to beat and settlement source |

For Polymarket's short crypto rounds, what matters is the price the market settles on and where the round started. [TradeLabs AI](https://tradelabsai.com) builds its charts around that: the live price, the price to beat and the time left in each round. See [Up or Down Markets Explained](https://learn.tradelabsai.com/prediction-markets/up-or-down-markets-explained/) and [Price to Beat and How Rounds Settle](https://learn.tradelabsai.com/prediction-markets/price-to-beat/).

## What to compare

| Factor | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Data quality and source | Free data may be delayed or from a single exchange. See [Real-Time, Delayed and Historical Data](https://learn.tradelabsai.com/programming/real-time-data/) |
| Broker integration | Can you trade directly from charts? |
| Indicators and drawing tools | Built in variety and custom scripts |
| Backtesting | Built in strategy testers vary widely in realism. See [Backtesting Methodology](https://learn.tradelabsai.com/research/backtesting-methodology/) |
| Alerts | Server side alerts keep working when your computer is off. See [Alerts and Webhooks](https://learn.tradelabsai.com/programming/alerts-and-webhooks/) |
| Cost | Free tiers, subscriptions, one time licences, data fees |
| Devices | Desktop, web, mobile |

**Example: Matching platform to a trading plan**
A trader day trades micro E mini futures using volume profile and wants automated bracket orders. A browser based general platform would chart the market well, but order flow tools and automated order management are stronger in futures specialist platforms. The trader uses TradingView on a phone for quick analysis on the go, and NinjaTrader connected to their futures broker for execution with an automated stop and target on every entry. Two tools, each for what it does best. See [Bracket Orders](https://learn.tradelabsai.com/orders/bracket-orders/).

## Data caveats

Charts can differ between platforms because of data sources, session settings and time zones. A daily candle on one platform may close at 5 pm New York time and on another at midnight UTC, producing different patterns. When an indicator or level matters, know which data your platform uses. See [Timestamps, Time Zones and Daylight Saving](https://learn.tradelabsai.com/programming/timestamps-and-time-zones/).

## Common mistakes

1. **Switching platforms constantly** instead of mastering one.
2. **Indicator overload,** cluttering charts with too many tools.
3. **Trusting built in backtesters** without checking assumptions.
4. **Paying for features you do not use.**
5. **Ignoring data differences** between charts and your broker's prices.
