A momentum candle is a candle with a large body and small or no wicks, closing near its high (bullish) or near its low (bearish). It shows that one side controlled the entire period: buyers pushed price up from open to close, or sellers pushed it down, with little resistance. Momentum candles often appear at the start of breakouts and impulses, and reading them helps you judge conviction behind a move.

## What makes a momentum candle

*Figure: After a run of small candles, a momentum candle shows buyers took control.*

| Feature | Guideline |
|---|---|
| Body size | Well above the average body of recent candles, often 1.5 to 2 times or more |
| Wicks | Small relative to the body |
| Close | Near the high (bullish) or low (bearish) |
| Volume | Ideally above average |
| Location | Breaking a level or starting a move |

A candle with no wicks at all is a [Marubozu](https://learn.tradelabsai.com/candlesticks/marubozu/).

## What momentum candles tell you

- **Conviction:** one side was in control from open to close.
- **Possible start of an impulse:** strong candles often begin trend legs. See [Impulse and Correction](https://learn.tradelabsai.com/price-action/impulse-and-correction/).
- **Breakout strength:** a momentum candle closing beyond resistance is more convincing than a small candle or a wick. See [Breakouts](https://learn.tradelabsai.com/price-action/breakouts/).
- **Imbalance:** in smart money concepts, a large displacement candle can leave a fair value gap. See [Displacement](https://learn.tradelabsai.com/smart-money/displacement/) and [Fair Value Gaps](https://learn.tradelabsai.com/smart-money/fair-value-gaps/).

**Example: A momentum breakout**
A stock's daily candles have averaged a $1.20 range for two weeks inside a $58 to $61 range. Then a candle opens at $60.80, never trades below $60.60 and closes at $63.90, near its $64.00 high, on twice average volume. That momentum candle broke resistance with conviction. Rather than chase it, a trader plans to buy a pullback towards $61.50 to $62, with a stop below $60.50.

## Context matters

A momentum candle's meaning depends on where it appears:

| Location | Possible meaning |
|---|---|
| Breaking out of a range | Start of a new move |
| In the trend's direction after a pullback | Trend resuming |
| Late in an extended trend, on huge volume | Possible exhaustion or climax |
| Against the trend at a key level | Possible reversal signal |

Very large candles after a long run can mark the end of a move rather than the start, as late buyers rush in and early buyers sell to them.

## Trading momentum candles

1. **Wait for the close.** A candle can look strong mid period and finish with a long wick.
2. **Avoid chasing far from the level.** Entry right at the close of a huge candle often means a distant stop.
3. **Look for continuation or pullback entries:** buy the next candle's break of the momentum candle's high, or a pullback to its midpoint or the broken level.
4. **Place stops logically:** below the momentum candle's low, or its midpoint for a tighter but riskier stop.

## Measuring momentum objectively

To avoid judging by eye, compare each candle's body with the average body of the last 20 candles. Bodies more than about twice the average stand out as momentum candles. Many traders also compare the candle's range with the [ATR (Average True Range)](https://learn.tradelabsai.com/indicators/atr/); a range of 1.5 to 2 times ATR or more marks an unusually forceful period. Writing the rule down keeps your journal statistics consistent.

## Common mistakes

- **Chasing every big candle,** especially late in trends.
- **Ignoring volume and location.**
- **Judging before the candle closes.**

## Frequently asked questions

### What is a momentum candle?

A candle with a large body and small wicks that closes near its extreme, showing strong control by buyers or sellers for that period.

### Is a big green candle always bullish?

Not always. Early in a move or at a breakout it often is, but very large candles late in a trend can signal exhaustion.

### Should I enter on a momentum candle?

Many traders prefer to wait for the candle to close and then enter on a pullback or a break of its high, rather than chasing it.
